Homework

The first homework packet of the year will go home with the blue and white Friday PENGUIN folders on Friday Sept. 9.

Each Friday look for the folder containing the work from the week and the homework packet. The homework packets are to be completed by the student, signed by an adult and returned on THURSDAY of the following week. Please be sure to record the work done at home and check or sign the needed blanks for your child to receive credit for their homework. Remember the packet needs to be returned on THURSDAY with the folder. :)

As the year continues, please remember that HOMEWORK IS DUE ON THURSDAY of the following week that it is sent home. I often have packets that are returned on Friday. According to our school policy stated in the Student Handbook, the Homework needs to be returned on THURSDAY for credit. Late homework is not able to be credited unless the child was absent on Thursday, then it is due on the day the child returns to school. Please remember this in your busy week. :)

Snacks

Several students bring snacks from home to eat after the morning recess. These need to be healthy, and easy to eat. Please avoid messy snacks such as pudding, yogurt, applesauce, etc. If you bring an apple or an orange, please cut it into kid sized pieces at home as snack time is about 10 minutes.

Time Tests for Math

We will begin to give the students Math Time Tests during the month of September. These tests are addition and subtraction tests that are designed for the students to be able to recall facts quickly. These are separate sheets of 50 problems in addition and 50 for subtraction problems.

Students will have 10 minutes to complete the facts at the beginning of the year and during the first semester. During the second semester we expect the students to complete them in 7 minutes. These are a learning tool and not meant to be a pressure for the students - please do not be concerned about the scores at the beginning of the year. :) Students should be able to finish the tests toward the end on each semester within the time limits. We will do these tests at least once each month for the students to practice their facts.

Once students are successful in the Addition and Subtraction Tests, they are able to take Multiplication and Division Time Tests.

We are also having the students do 'Math Facts in a Flash' which is a computer program to help children learn and master their Math Facts. This is a graduated program and covers addition and subtraction facts from easy levels to more challenging levels. This is done in the mornings before school begins and during the first part of the day.
work on the Math Facts in a Flash for accuracy.

Spelling Words - TEST ON THURSDAYS

The Spelling words have been placed on the blog site for those of you that would like to have a 'head start' on the Spelling words for each week. This will be especially helpful if your child is absent when the Homework Packets are sent home.

SPELLING WORDS -- TESTS ARE ON THURSDAYS

BONUS WORDS:
Sometimes for the test I will add 'bonus' words that have the same ending as the words in the Spelling list, but will be spelled with a different beginning sound. (i.e. If 'call' is in the list, a bonus word could be 'tall'. Tall has the same pattern as call but changes the letter 't' instead of the 'c'.) This type of thinking helps the students to think about what they are spelling and just not teaching them to memorize the words.

This would be an excellent way to help your child at home to listen for the sounds in different words and word patterns.

Art

Our Art curriculum is the series ART ATTACK. It is a series of video presentations that show the students how to use a variety of materials and produce wonderful products. The students enjoy the lessons and are able to produce some excellent work. These Works of Art are displayed in the hallway near our room. When you are dropping off or picking up your child please take a few minutes to look at our finished products. They are WONDERFUL !
